Bound for Success

Unpaid college, job, and life support program. Available to any girl participating in the Technology and Leadership Program.

Bound for Success, an unpaid program, gives young women a chance to improve their academic, career, and life-management goals and skills. The program offers workshops, tutoring, and individual guidance to ensure that each girl receives specialized attention for her particular concerns and goals.

College Support

We provide individual college counseling to help girls complete their high school requirements, identify and tour appropriate colleges, apply for admission (including essay writing), and obtain financial aid. We also provide SAT workshops throughout the year, ongoing tutoring as needed, and follow-up support for GirlSource graduates already in local colleges and universities.

Career Support

We work with every GirlSource participant to think about the difference between a job and a career and how each might play out in her life. We also help girls prepare and maintain their resumes, succeed with job applications and interviews, and explore different professions through career workshops led by women in the workplace.

Career Bound is a program under GirlSource's Bound for Success Program that connects young women ages 14-21 years old with professionals and soon-to-be professional adults as a way of providing career exploration, guidance and mentoring. Young women work with their mentors in developing and accomplishing short term goals in fields and careers they are interested in pursuing. Career Bound is continually taking applications for interested mentors to hire for the program beginning in July each year.

Life-management Support

We conduct literacy and financial planning workshops for GirlSource participants and offer as-needed guidance in everything from housing to family planning. Working with Juma Ventures, we also refer girls to programs that matches their savings for college expenses, such as tuition, housing, and computers.

Outreach and Education Team
Young women who have participated in at least one GirlSource program are able to serve as Outreach Educators for GirlSource. As an Outreach Educator, young women work as a team to deliver educational workshops on issues concerning young women to local schools and community organizations. The OET also conduct outreach at job fairs, conferences, schools and agencies, providing information about GirlSource programs and services to young women in the community. Each year, the OET selects one project to complete during their term. In 2006, the young women presented a workshop "Females Surviving the 'Hood: A Look at Violence in the Lives of Young Women in San Francisco" at the Empowering Women of color conference at UC Berkeley. This year, the OET will organize and host their own conference "Young Women vs. Young Women: How to Break the Cycle" in April 2007.
