Welcome Our New Executive Director
Last month, GirlSource welcomed Leticia Hernandez as its new Executive Director. Leticia brings to GirlSource a variety of strong skills and experience. In February 2007, Leticia was invited to share her experience in Youth Development at a conference held in El Salvador by the Ministry of Culture. She translated her experiences working with youth for all the Ministers of Culture in Central America. Leticia also has an extensive history working with youth in San Francisco's Mission District and an impressive background in youth development implementing innovative programs through her work with the Jamestown Community Center. GirlSource will greatly benefit from her leadership, fundraising, business and program development skills as she leads the GirlSource into its next phase.
Listen in as Briona Johnson, one of our podcasters from this summer's TLP program, interviews Leticia and learn more about her background, vision and plans for the future of GirlSource.
Gearing Up for College
GirlSource will be offering Free S.A.T prep series this fall for High School Juniors and Seniors. The series begins on Wednesday, September 26th, 2007 and runs until Wednesday, November 28th, 2007. The series has two class sessions, Wednesdays 4pm-6pm and Wednesdays 6-8pm, and young women who attend all ten sessions will receive a $100 stipend at the end. My name is Christina Perez I have been a participant at GirlSource for two years and I have loved every moment of it. GirlSource has helped me in so many different ways. I am excited to take the sat prep class, I feel like it is a good opportunity because I have a lot to learn about college and what it takes to be a college student. I believe the SAT course will help me with that and feeling more prepared for applying to college. It is important to me because I can better my SAT score and general education skills. This is also usually a very expensive course and I am glad that I have the chance to take it for free with GirlSource. Being a part of this SAT prep course means a lot to me because I have more options in what college I want to attend.
~ Christina Perez, 19 years old GirlSource Participant

This Summer the Technology and Leadership Program explored a new form of media communication. We started our very own Podcast! The young women in TLP researched, wrote, recorded and edited several shows on a variety of topics. Our first episode is on Teen Violence. In the weeks to come we will be launching our Podcast on Uthtv.com and will have bi-monthly shows.

Sister Scholar
GirlSource launched the newest component of Bound for Success on August 19th! The Sister Scholar Program links past participants of GirlSource who are now college women with entering GirlSource Freshwomen. This mentor program focuses on providing support and increasing retention of young women of color in higher education. The first event was a total success with all fourteen participants in attendance. Meeting each other for the first time, the Sister Scholars mingled and expressed excitement about this opportunity for support from a past GirlSource college student! Sister Scholar is a one-year mentoring commitment that requires close communication and relationship building between the mentee and mentor. Sister Scholar ensures support for the young women as they adjust to university level academics and college life by providing a GirlSource peer who commits to weekly phone-call check-ins, twice a month lunch/coffee study dates, and attendance at three GirlSource sponsored social events. We are thrilled about extending the GirlSource pipeline to our college women!

Making Bequests to GirlSource
What is a bequest and how do I include GirlSource in my will?
A bequest is a gift of personal property, such as money, stock, bonds, real property, or jewelry, which is directed by the provisions of the decedent's will.
What are the benefits of making a bequest?
Distributing your estate by means of a professionally drafted will or living trust ensures that your wishes will be carried out. They can also serve as a creative vehicle for making a thoughtful gift to GirlSource. For many people, a bequest offers the opportunity to make a larger gift than would be possible during one's lifetime. A bequest gift also reduces your assets subject to estate tax.
What are the types of bequests that I can make?
There are different types of bequests.
A charitable bequest is a gift intended to serve a religious, educational, political, or general social purpose to benefit mankind, aimed at the community or a particular segment of it. Charitable bequests also reduce the estate taxes that might be owed on the estate left by a decedent.
A demonstrative bequest is a gift of money that must be paid from a particular source, such as a designated bank account or the sale of stock in a designated corporation.
A general bequest is a gift of money or other property that can be paid or taken from the decedent's general assets and not from a specific fund designated by the terms of the will.
If you decide to make a bequest, share your plan with your attorney and financial advisors, who will draft appropriate language for your will and help structure the gift effectively.

Matching Gifts Program
Many corporations offer Charitable Foundation Matching Gift programs to encourage associates to contribute to qualifying nonprofit organizations of their choice. These programs typically offer a way to double individual contributions to their favorite organizations and thus improve their communities. Many corporations view this as an opportunity to get involved in the local community in a way that is meaningful to its employees, thus improving employee retention and general goodwill.
